We cannot dismiss the empowering nature of technology and the necessity of its proper implementation to stay ahead and stay relevant. Honestly speaking, in a survey conducted recently, it was observed that most of the companies have little understanding of WHAT technologies to use.
When we have too much choice, we are confused. When we have little choice, we are helpless.
Most of the companies are struggling to have their workflows go digital.
Ideal Environment
Imagine a company which has a backbone technology stack, which has the following features
- supports other technologies to be built upon it without sacrificing the user experience.
- not getting limited by certain type of technologies only.
- having custom digital workflows implemented for each department, or group of employees which reflect actual workflows.
- customized unique dashboards for employee, manager, any type of stakeholders, etc.
- all the benefits of a centralized system, service oriented architecture and, micro-services but none of their drawbacks.
- compartmentalized layers of cyber security with proactive defense.
Technology should always enable to do more, with less.
The Current Problem
The problem with technology is that it becomes redundant quickly. We must adapt with the same pace as it evolves. Otherwise, the delay isn't beneficial.
We face this issue, as most of the technical staff will stick to what they have learnt and don't really expand their skills. Because of such staff or vendors, we get stuck with their limited expertise. The work gets done mostly, but not efficiently.
Secondly, the rate at which technology evolves also poses the problem of choice. We have plenty of choice and we might get overwhelmed with WHAT to implement.
Lastly, we are sometimes stuck with what we have because the cost of changing the whole thing is way too expensive.
The Probable Solution
To adapt quickly, we need to have resources who are on the edge. Those who can implement the latest technologies and are abreast with the upcoming technologies as well.
Digital transformation happens at the top first and then trickles down. The primary decision to change the way the company operates needs to taken first at the top level. That vision then needs to be communicated clearly and effectively.
Repurposing resources is an important aspect to this organizational change. And as expected, there will be immense resistance to any change in the processes or workflow.
Bringing about change slowly is important for the success of any digital transformation.
Investing in cutting edge technology should be one of the top three priorities of any company. Hands down.
